With over 25 years of experience in quantum technologies, I am a pioneering physicist and consultant leading in Quantum Systems Engineering — a field I founded to accelerate quantum technologies development by integrating Systems Engineering processes — and in innovative higher education practices where I have created, implemented and overseen new, industry-aligned, physics degree and training programmes which are recognised as world leading.
I am the author of over 80 journal articles and conference papers, and a graduate-level textbook on Quantum Physics covering foundations, simulation and engineered quantum devices. My expertise spans quantum physics and engineered quantum devices, including feedback & control, reliability engineering and modelling & simulation.
I have successfully built and led large multidisciplinary teams and spearheaded transformative projects. This includes creating the world’s first research group on Quantum Systems Engineering, which remains at the forefront of the area, and a comprehensive redesign of a pioneering physics curriculum praised by the Institute of Physics. My passion lies in applying my technical expertise and leadership experience to drive the commercialisation and deployment of quantum technologies.
Taking advantage of systems thinking and engineering methods we share a process to understand and deliver your requirements and ensure that they meet your ambitions for students, professional bodies, research communities and industry.
By defining clear objectives and mapping the system's components, such as curricula, infrastructure, and external influences, our approach integrates theoretical foundations with practical skills and emerging industry practices. For example, my understanding of how to successfully integrate Emmy Noether's work on symmetry and conservation laws to first year physics degrees highlights the strength of my approach. The approach has proven success preparing learners for real-world challenges and supports workforce readiness in rapidly evolving fields like quantum technologies.
For this reason, my offering is provided within a tiered structure. We begin with stakeholder and requirements analysis to ensure that we all have a clear understanding of the desired outcome.
The next state is conceptualisation where we explore the trade-space of possible options and selecting possible solutions.
The third stage is to develop the selected solution planning for verification, testing and maintenance. This involves a phased approach that includes tailored solutions, risk mitigation, and optimised implementation to ensure strategic educational success in program design and delivery.
